Wealth Is Cultivation: Which Realm Are You On?

A note for readers new to the genre: cultivation (xianxia) is a huge category of Chinese fantasy fiction where characters train to grow more powerful and eventually become immortal, advancing through named “realms.” You don’t need to know the genre to follow this piece — the realm ladder is just a vehicle for one idea about money.

A counterintuitive question

Let me start with a question: why does your company’s executive earn more than you?

The reflexive answers are “they work harder,” “they’re smarter,” “they have better degrees.” But think for a second and it falls apart — among the front-line workers you know, there are surely people who grind harder and think sharper than some executives, yet earn an order of magnitude less.

Look further up the chain. The founder out-earns the executive. The investor out-earns the founder. The platform that sets industry standards out-earns the investor. And along this whole chain, the higher you go, the less time people spend doing hands-on work — and the more they make.

If wealth really scaled with effort and raw power, this chain should run the other way. It doesn’t. Which means our mental model of wealth was plotted on the wrong axis from the start.

Here’s the interesting part: the right axis was spelled out long ago — in cultivation novels.

The overlooked turning point in cultivation

Anyone who reads cultivation fiction remembers the realm names: Qi Refining, Foundation Establishment, Golden Core, Nascent Soul, Soul Formation… Most people read them as a power leaderboard — higher realm, harder punch.

But look closely at how these systems are built, and you’ll spot a turning point almost everyone overlooks.

Low-realm cultivation is essentially training raw power: absorbing the world’s spiritual energy (qi), tempering the body, storing energy in the dantian. At the Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment stages, what’s being compared is who has more qi, whose body is stronger — a bigger battery and a stronger motor, basically.

But at the high realms, the core goal changes. For a True Immortal or Golden Immortal, the most important task is no longer hoarding energy — it’s comprehending the laws (the Dao) of the world. By the Great Luo Golden Immortal stage, it’s “laws perfected, one domain under your command.” Higher still, merging with the Dao and attaining sainthood means you personally become part of the rules.

In other words, the further this path goes, the less it’s about power and the more it’s about your relationship to the rules of the world:

At first you obey the rules (gravity holds you down; you can only run on the ground).
Then you operate efficiently within them (you learn to fly — the rules didn’t change, but now you work them).
Then you locally bend them (touching the laws of space: pulling objects from afar, folding distance).
Finally you write the rules, and eventually become them (a whole domain answers to you).

Higher cultivation isn’t more power — it’s a wider range of rules you can influence. That sentence is the real hidden throughline of the entire system.

Laying the cultivation ladder out flat

Condense the mainstream systems (A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality plus the common immortal-world canon) and you get a single ladder — a ladder of “your relationship to the rules”:

Notice the direction of this ladder. It isn’t “power from small to large.” It’s “the rules you can influence, from none to a domain.” A Qi Refining cultivator can train all he wants — his raw power has a ceiling. But the moment he crosses the “comprehending the laws” threshold, the game changes: what he affects is no longer his own single punch, but an entire stretch of space around him.

Wealth climbs the exact same ladder

Now transplant that table, untouched, onto the world of money. It fits seamlessly:

Walk it level by level, and you’ll see every leap in income is really the same thing: your relationship to the rules moved up one notch.

Employee (Qi Refining): you obey rules the company set — when you clock in, what you work on, how much you’re paid, none of it is yours to decide. The one variable you can turn is “try harder,” i.e. pump more charge into the battery. So an employee’s income ceiling is the ceiling of one person’s time and stamina — low, and hard.

Expert / senior (Golden Core): still inside the rules, but you’ve learned to “fly” — same rules, you just work them better than others, doing the work of three people, or work others can’t. Income steps up, but nothing fundamental changed: you’re still a rule-follower, just an efficient one.

Executive (Soul Formation): here’s the turning point. For the first time you hold the power to bend local rules — you decide how budget is split, who gets hired or cut, how process flows. What you affect is no longer your own two hands but a whole team, a whole business line. “Awareness spanning miles” is exactly this. Income jumps an order of magnitude — not because your hands got faster, but because one wave of your hand shifts the output of dozens or hundreds of people.

Owner (Great Ascension): you command a company’s entire ruleset — who to hire, what to sell, how to price, how to split the money. Unity with heaven: the company is an extension of your will.

Platform / monopolist (Great Luo Golden Immortal): you no longer run just one company — you define the rules of a whole market. Everyone who wants to do business in that market plays by your rules and pays your toll. One domain, at your word.

Rule-writer (Saint / Dao-merged): the people at the very top write the rules themselves — central banks that issue currency, legislators who write law, bodies that define technical standards and protocols. They don’t play any single game, because every game runs on the board they drew.

The core insight: wealth = the range of rules you can influence

Lay both tables side by side and it collapses into one line:

Your wealth ceiling is roughly equal to the range of rules you can influence.

This explains the counterintuitive opening. The executive isn’t rich because they work harder — the opposite: because they can’t reach a bigger set of rules yet, effort is all they’ve got. Once someone’s range of influence over rules widens, their income rises an order of magnitude, and it has almost nothing to do with a few more drops of sweat.

It also explains why “effort” has a ceiling: raw power is capped; rules aren’t. No matter how hard you train, a day is still 24 hours and two hands. But the reach of a rule can be scaled without limit — from affecting yourself, to a team, to a company, to a market. Each widening swaps your income to a new order of magnitude.

Once you see this, a lot of things stop being puzzling:

Why does writing code pay less than selling it? — The first obeys the rules; the second prices them.
Why does the same work pay more freelance than employed? — You went from “obeying the company’s rules” to “setting your own,” even just a little.
Why is capital worth more than labor? — Capital influences the rules of how money flows; labor only influences how one task gets done.

Down to earth: how to comprehend one notch higher

At this point you might say: I get it, but I’m an ordinary person — I’m not going to comprehend the central bank’s Dao.

Right, and you don’t have to leap to the top. No one in these stories ascends straight from Qi Refining either. The point is to figure out where the next notch is, and move toward it.

There’s only one direction: move from “executing rules” toward “designing rules.”

Executing rules: you do what you’re told. This is Qi Refining; income is billed by time.
Understanding rules: you don’t just do the work, you grasp why the rules are set this way, where the gaps are, what could be optimized. This is Golden Core; you begin to “fly.”
Designing rules: you get to set a small piece of the rules — even just a process for your team, a price for your side business, a standard for one product. This is Soul Formation; you’ve bent a rule for the first time.

In daily terms, moving up a notch can be small:

At work, fight for the “rule-setting” jobs. Same salary, but the person writing the requirements ranks a notch above the one taking them; the one setting the standard, a notch above the one following it. Deliberately do the things that decide how others work.
Do one small thing where you set the rules yourself. A side project, a product, a service you price. Scale doesn’t matter — what matters is that you’ve stood, for the first time, on the rule-setter’s side, even if it affects only one customer.
Swap the question “how do I finish this faster” for “why is this rule the way it is, and can it change.” The first makes you a better tool; the second is where you start comprehending the laws.

Get the direction right and the rest is time. Don’t compete on raw power at the Qi Refining stage — that road’s ceiling is low. Look up at the “comprehending the laws” threshold, and find a way across.

Closing: financial freedom is really “merging with the Dao”

Let me end on that overused phrase, financial freedom.

Most people picture it as “enough money that I can stop working.” On our axis, that reading is still stuck at Qi Refining — it’s still measuring “is the battery big enough.”

Real financial freedom is closer to merging with the Dao in cultivation: you’re no longer driven by the rules — you’ve become part of them. Your income no longer comes from “how much time you put in,” but from “the rules you influence running on your behalf” — assets compounding, systems producing, a market operating on rules you helped write. While you sleep, the rules keep working for you.

That’s the end of the ladder: at the summit, what you want isn’t more money — it’s the freedom of no longer being pushed around by money and rules.

From Qi Refining to merging with the Dao, from obeying the rules to becoming them. The path to wealth is the same path as cultivation.
